wathed with lavender fields, dotted with medieval hilltop villages and graced by elegant cities, the southeastern region of Provence stretches from the Rhône in the west to the Italian border in the east and south to the Mediterranean. Its light and landscapes inspired both Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh, and you can stroll along the leafy boulevards of the former’s home city of Aixen-Provence and trace the works of the latter in Arles and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. As the chic Cote d’Azur gives way to rolling hills, the old province of Provence offers vistas of a graniteflecked landscape dotted with lavender fields. Arguably the wildest of these views feature the Camargue, a place where red salt lagoons camouflage the unexpected presence of pink flamingos and where herds of white horses wander, captivating in their mystique. However, the quintessential Provencal landscapes are to be found in the Luberon, an area to the north of Aix en Provence. If you envision a rich countryside of vineyards, olive groves and lavender; hill-top villages; daily markets; family-run wineries; eating outside for most of the year - and if you're seeing it all in the clear, saturated light of the south - then yes, you have the Luberon in mind. France’s second city can also lay claim to being its oldest. Ever since Greek traders settled in this sunny corner of the Mediterranean in 600 BC, Marseille has been humming with the comings and goings of a significant port, although today’s tourist is likely to have been drawn by the beautifully regenerated city centre, rich in museums, seafood restaurants and boutiques. Perhaps it was Peter Mayall’s endearing books on the region which kickstarted the present British love affair, but there is no doubt that Provence has come to symbolise, like Tuscany in Italy, the idyllic rural , Mediterranean lifestyle of salad days in the sun. It’s not a new fad, as the Romans built impressive settlements in Arles, Orange and Nimes, and the papacy even moved its operations to Avignon when it had to flee Rome. provence S Mas is the name given to a farmhouse, built with local stone. Originally the “mas” was intended as a storage area for agricultural products, a self-sufficient economic unit, which stored fruits, vegetables, cereals, milk and so on. A mas has no windows on the north side, due to the mistral – a dramatic wind that whistles fiercely down the Rhone and then swings eastwards along the coast. The windows are narrow for protection against the heat during the summer or cold during the winter. Many of these old farmhouses have been converted into fashionable villas and charming hotels. The cradle of Alpine skiing What do the ski areas of St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Zürs, Lech, Schröcken, and Warth have in common? They all make up Ski Arlberg, Austria’s largest interconnected ski terrain. The Arlberg offers 305 kilometres of piste, a groomed paradise for skiers and snowboarders alike with a further 200 kilometres of challenging off-piste. ompared with Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast, the ‘breadbasket’ of Italy is lesser visited yet remains the holiday destination of choice for chic Italians from the north. But, what it lacks in dramatic landscapes and natural beauty, it more than makes up for with its incredible food and produce, Baroque architecture and some of Europe’s most beautiful beaches. A growing collection of luxuriously refurbished masseria (restored fortified farmsteads), amazing climate and frequent flights to both Bari and Brindisi make the region an enticing travel destination year round. What’s more this hidden gem in the heel of Italy has some excellent surprises up its sleeve. For instance, head south from Bari to visit the bewitching town of Alberobello with its large concentration of trulli, Puglia’s unique conical vaulted cottages. It is said that this type of construction was used since it was easy to dismantle as ancient local laws forbade permanent settlement. Thankfully, in 1797, Alberobello achieved ‘town’ status and the restrictions were dropped, and yet these quirky workers cottages remained. Although located in the neighbouring region of Basilicata, the hilltop town of Matera, which was awarded the 2019 European Capital of Culture, is home to another intriguing style of accommodation, the ancient Sassi. These pre-historic cave dwellings carved into the sides of the a precipitous ravine, some of which date back to 7000 BC, are not noticeable from afar, yet on exploring the winding streets you will discover that the town is a honeycomb of these dwellings. Indeed, some of them have been cleverly converted into hotels (Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita is featured ). Matera was a location in the most recent James Bond film and is a wonderful contrast to the sandy beaches and richer towns that dot the Puglian coastline. Of course, for a supreme display of Baroque period buildings, Puglia is home to a staggering concentration of this ornate architecture in several towns but most prevalent in the city of Lecce, known as ‘the Florence of the South’. One of its finest works is the 16th century Basilica di Santa Croce on Via Umberto. The beautiful exterior of the church is peppered with carvings of cherubs and animals, and is so ornate it is no surprise that it took nearly a century to be completed. For total period immersion, head for Piazza Del Duomo, the heart of the city and home to its 12-century cathedral. This beautiful square is flanked on all sides by Baroque masterpieces. Heritage architecture has also become the backbone of the burgeoning luxury hotel scene in Puglia, and there are a growing number of town and country properties that have been sympathetically renovated and embellished to cater for the increased numbers of discerning travellers seeking a break to this wonderful region. Most commonly, old fortified farmsteads set within rambling estates of fruit orchards, vineyards and olive groves have been re-purposed by gifted architects into the most relaxing retreats. These Masserie are to be found all across the open countryside and some of our favourites are featured here together with some impressive historical townhouses and even a palazzo. Puglia C 14
A masseria is a traditional, fortified farm or country house built within a large estate. Its structure served a number of purposes. Firstly, providing accommodation for the local lord or Massaro (landlord or farm manager), who would live on the upper floor below which were usually sited the storerooms, workrooms, stables and living quarters for the farmhands. It was generally very large in size and built of thickly-carved blocks of tuff and limestone. The main building was often connected to a chapel and surrounded by courtyards, and large fertile gardens. Finally, strong protective perimeter walls were designed to keep out unwanted visitors like marauding Turks. Beyond the walls lay the fields and farmland. Architecturally, masserie are fabulously exotic places where Greek, Moorish and Spanish influences bear witness to Puglia’s eclectic past. Thanks to their large size and impressive architectural designs, over recent decades a great many of Puglia’s masserie have been transformed into luxury hotels and glorious private residences. he Galápagos Islands, located roughly 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, remained a closely-guarded natural secret for millions of years. Over that time, the archipelago evolved into a home for an allstar cast of plants and animals, many with unusual traits to their more worldly cousins. Sometime in the 1800s, some adventurous navigators and intrepid explorers started arriving in the Galápagos Islands. The most famous early visitor was Charles Darwin, a young naturalist who spent 19 days studying the islands' flora and fauna in 1835. In 1859, Darwin published ‘On the Origin of Species’, which introduced his theory of evolution - and the Galápagos Islands - to the world. Since then, word of these islands and their magnificent beauty has steadily grown. In 1959, the Galápagos became Ecuador's first national park, and in 1978, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today, more than 275,000 people visit the Galápagos every year to see those incredible animals and landscapes for themselves. As amazing as you think the Galápagos Islands will be, they routinely exceed expectations. It's a place where lizards swim, birds walk, and humans, for once, do not take centre stage. The first decision you have to make about visiting the Galápagos Islands is also the most difficult. A gorgeous five-star hotel on the shores of Talamanca within walking distance of Ibiza Old Town, this hotel is perfect for a relaxing weekend away. Beachside hotels are rare in Ibiza, so Nobu’s location is very appealing with fabulous views of the Mediterranean and the neighbouring island of Formentera in the distance. The hotel is beautifully decorated with lovely soft furnishings and a light and airy feel. Staff are friendly and attentive, and the swimming pools are exquisite – one for adults only and another for families with young children. The food is also exceptional. Definitely one to add to your list, we had the most wonderful stay! I recently visited the small Balkan nation of Montenegro and was wowed by its gorgeous beaches, verdant mountains and postcardperfect historic towns. We stayed at the chic One & Only Portonovi with its water-front location, world class dining and pioneering wellness by Chenot. It is just minutes away from the fashionable marina with an excellent choice of restaurants, bars and shops. We then moved on to the stylish Regent Porto Montenegro which is located on the Marina and surrounded by designer shops and superb restaurants. I was so impressed with the beauty of Montenegro, the quality of the food, the beautiful views and friendliness of the people. In January 2020 we visited South America and what a trip we had! We travelled to Northern Chile and experienced the Atacama Desert, the winelands, Patagonia in the South, Buenos Aires and Iguacu Falls. It is such a vast continent and we left knowing that there was so much more to see. Little did we realise that on our return nobody would be travelling anywhere anytime soon…we had many memorable moments but for me our four night cruise on the Stella Australis was the best! From Glacier Alley to Penguins to being able to land on Cape Horn – what an experience. After a lot of discussion we decided The Maldives was the destination of choice for our Family holiday. After a quick visit to see family in The Netherlands we set off from Amsterdam Airport to Male with Qatar Airways. Upon arrival we transferred to the seaplane for a 45min flight to Sun Siyam Iru Fushi. Nestled within the Noonu Atoll north of Male sits this beautiful 52 acre island. The island had lots to offer, an abundance of restaurants and bars gave us lots of food options, including a spectacular Xmas Eve Gala dinner. As some of you know, holidays are usually focused around a golf course. Not this time! Clubs were banned and other areas for entertainment were sort. As part of our package we were given snorkelling equipment for the duration. Our first trip out and we spotted a turtle swimming, amazing! Every day we saw something different. We also got to have a taster dive but Rosie was not impressed coming face to face with a shark! Tennis & badminton outside, a recreation centre, a compact but well equipped gym, plenty of watersports including kayaking and paddle boarding which is much tougher than it looks. A spa and wellness centre with the hydrotherapy included in our stay. A wonderful relaxing family holiday in a beautiful location. The scenery really does live up to the hype!
