Day 3&4 of South West Tour
After a swim and a walk along the beach we went up to check in to The Saunton Sands Hotel. They are fortunate enough to be able to trade on a super location. The rooms are looking a bit tired and the bathrooms are definitely in need of updating. It doesn’t come cheap and may well be worth looking elsewhere!
We headed down to the pool in the afternoon, quite small and uninspiring. A show started up next to us, making it feel quite Butlinesque! We then headed back to the room only to realise we could hear the show loud and clear from our sea facing room.
For dinner we went down to the Beachside Grill, we had tried to book earlier in the day only to be told they were full. Our only option was to turn up for an outside seat which operates on a first come first served basis. The food was good and it stayed warm enough to enjoy being outside (we did have on jumpers and wind proof jackets) there are also blankets available if you can find them.
The breakfast buffet had a good selection of well cooked food. Unfortunately the same could not be said for the omelette! It was so thin you could see through it and the mushroom and onion were thrown in the middle of it. Very bizarre!
A beautiful morning to play golf at Saunton Sands, East Course. Great golf with picturesque holes, the blind shots were a challenge and of course the pot bunkers.
After golf back to the beach for a surf lesson. Sadly the waves were not really here today but it was still good practice and lovely being out on the water.
The predicted stormy weather arrived this evening, no chance of a table at the Beachside Grill. Down to The Dining Room, the fine dining restaurant. The ambience is all wrong in here, it’s way to bright and the decoration, although leaning towards the art deco theme, could be so much more interesting. I guess that is the problem with the hotel in general. The good news is that the food was delicious! We had the steak and lobster, all well cooked and generous in size.
